In recent video interview done by a french gaming portal http://www.jeuxvideo.tv i found more about the RVR(Realm vs Realm) that the boys from EA Mythic are working on it, and I started to dig for more, I wasn’t sure what features from DAOC are coming with, but things are looking good.
Now to understand why WAR might change the face of MMORPG with the RVR system, you must think first at your basic mmorpg game. Lets start with the most popular, World of Warcraft. WOW offers you tons of content for you and your group, party, guild, as in quests, instanced battle grounds, arena matches, and those nifty raids some people die for. All these in one polished very well done game. But hey, that’s almost every mmorpg game given us in the last years, besides a few small features, is nothing new beside of the few “instanced” features. You grind you way to highest lvl to raid, pvp, and explore, which is good in theory. Do other games do something else? Not really.
A small look at Age of Conan, brings us an more active combat, great graphics, mount combat, and player cities, sieges, raids, dungeons, déjà vu? Beside player own cities, and battle keeps, I believe I am getting the same thing, designed by another group of persons, better or worse. Still early for me to make a decision over this game, so a better view will be in a few weeks, as in a review.
So what I am looking for? I always looked that my actions in that game to influence the world in someway, and also to have big conflict, and loots, rewards from it, this making me feel that I am part of something, and that I can do my part for better or worse, so i hoped and still hope that WAR will do that.
In the interview on the french video gaming site posted here, there is an interview with the Executive Producer of EA Mythic, Jeff Hickman talked about the upcoming feature of this mmorpg game, including the RVR details, after i watched that video, I just remembered that is what I want from the new mmorpg model, that I was waiting for, would it disappoint me, I doubt it, but we will see.
The RVR, he tell us, has five pieces. In the open world RVR, that happens everywhere in the land, and by entering in the RVR space, you can participate in skirmishes, battlefield objectives, keep takes(castle sieges), scenarios and Capital Cities takedown.
Battle Field Objectives: are where you fight for strategic objectives that when you control give you bonus and to the entire realm.
Keeps System: keep, castles you conquer or defend with siege weapons, get’s you the control of the land around them, and give you bonuses to you, your group and the entire realm,
Scenarios: In scenarios you fight in the zone that you are in, they are around 30 of these in the game, last about 15 min and easy to get in and easy to get out of.
Capitals Cities: Your ultimate goal as a player is World Domination (yeah humans never have enough), so basically he said, you can fight against your enemy(other realm, race of players) from your Capital City, capturing the land trough RVR system, pushing him back to his Capital City and even siege his Capital City, pillaging and looting, burning it to the ground and make it your own. Not sure what happens if a realm looses the capital, but I am sure is some system there.
So in short choose a realm, race, and fight for it, even from low levels you can make a difference so you don’t have to grind you way to lvl 23498309489384, just take your time, enjoy it.
At the same time WAR has considerable PVE content that works in the same system, things you do help on making your realm better, so don’t be scared yet, these features that wont be covered in this article.
So yeah this is my first take on the RVR system for WAR. While playing WOW in instanced BGs, instanced Arenas, instanced Raids, I didn’t change the world, or help much my race, I just evolved in getting me glory by winning fights, or equip, but is that enough? Ask yourself…
